Titanfall: Impressions
The above video has been taken from YouTube user "Iptec Video". Thank You for permitting us to use this video.
Titanfall won the most awards at E3 2013 for good reason. The mech-based shooter attempts to reconcile single player and multiplayer together and shake up a genre which has been accused of being bogged down with stereotypes and refusing to innovate within itself. You may not see the attraction of Respawn Entertainment's "Titanfall" if you go by multiplayer videos online. They will seem like a typical online match you have been playing since Halo on the Xbox. However, this is a grave mistake to make as Titanfall has more to it than getting on top of the leaderboard. Titanfall blends fine and tight gunplay with fluid acrobatic movements. Players are no longer limited to running around the mapp but now have the ability to seamlessly climb up walls, glide across buildings and cause devastating environmental changes. As you jump from building to building, you might begin to wonder if this is a shooter or a platformer.
Titanfall also introduces huge mechanical warriors called Titans that players can summon in times of need. Once they are aerially dropped, players have the option of whether to control the Titan by jumping into it or fight alongside it. A Titan is capable of changing the momentum of any battle going on, hence upon arrival, Titans are immediately targetted to minimize damage. It is also possible for players to combat an enemy Titan without the help of an ally Titan, but that is an incredibly hard proposition and the player will require mastery over the controls and will have to be quick on his feet to dodge incoming Titan attacks.
Titanfall has immense potential to breathe some fresh air into a stale genre. By introducing a boatload of new mechanics, Respawn is clearly not fooling around. Titan vs Titan battles have huge potential to become epics with the long jumps and movement will not bog the game down because of gravity constraints. It's ridiculous how much potential Titanfall has. It could be the FPS to play in the next years. Sadly, for PlayStation gamers, Titanfall is an Xbox One & PC exclusive.Titanfall is Microsoft's moment in the sun, it is their killer app, and a game that will shift gamers to buy an Xbox One.
Well played Microsoft, Well played.
