Ubisoft has simply outdone itself with Rayman Origins. If you are reading this review to find out whether this game is worth playing, stop reading, go out and buy Rayman Origins. The game is simply that good. Rayman Origins goes against the stereotype that "mature” and "realistic" graphics are needed for a game to be exceptional. Gaming has regained the innocence of Mario and old school platformers with this release. This resurgence of platformers has been a long time coming. Now, onto the actual game. Rayman Origins doesn't have the deepest story in the world, it is simply an excuse to go out and experience a new world completely different from the previous. Who really plays platformers for their story? Rayman Origins has some of the most amazing fun you will find in a videogame. Just the sheer whimsicality of the game is staggering; it manages to give you a different level every time varying from shoot-em-ups on the backs of Mosquitos to the race-against time of Tricky Treasures. Where Origins truly shines is in its gameplay. The most important requirement of any platformer is to have a fun and varied gameplay along with tight controls. Origins manages to mix in both along with maybe the best graphics of this generation. The graphics aren’t technically more brilliant than juggernauts like “Uncharted 3” and “Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim”, but Rayman Origins has the most stunning art style which could put these games to shame.
In this adventure however, Rayman isn’t alone to save the day. He is accompanied by his buddies Globox and the Teensies. This game is playable with four players on the same screen with the players assuming the roles of Rayman, Globox and the Teensies. Co-op gaming in Rayman is amazing fun and actually promotes teamwork among the players. As you enter and complete a world in Rayman Origins, you will learn a move which you will require to progress in the worlds to come. Rayman is divided into 9 separate worlds spanning a jungle, a desert, a sea and even a land based on the delicious land of food. In Rayman, it seems that the developers left no stone unturned to make this game a success and that is what it has become, with this ridiculous (and apparently infinite) creativity those brilliant minds at Ubisoft have.
Rayman Origins is the 2-D platformer of this generation, better than the majority of the “mature” games coming out in 2011. Yet still it won’t sell even half as they do. A true tragedy because this game is a diamond, you just need to find it.
