How to become a Master Thief (page 2)

Now that you have raised your Sneak skill to 100 and upgraded most of your skill tree, you will be a lethal in sneak combat. Most of your enemies will perish at your hand almost immediately. This is the stop where all the casuals get off. If you wish to be great in combat, this is the one of the best damage percent you will get with ANY build. If however, you wish to become a Master Thief, simply sneak shall not help you cause. You should be maxed out or proficient in atleast 4 of the remaining skills to uncover what thievery truly is in Skyrim. The three skills I surely recommend are Lockpicking, Light Armor and Pickpocketing. The fourth skill is completely up to you.You should make a decision between Speech and Alchemy. Speech will let you bribe and intimidate guards easily which is quite useful if you feel that you get caught often. Alchemy will let you concoct your own potions which will save you some gold as well as let you create potions which will boost your other skills for a limited time. Levelling these skills up is quite simply done in Riften, and shouldn't take too long to do ( around 2 hours).

Out of these skills, Lockpicking is my favorite and most used skill. Although, I haven't maxed it out ( I think I'm at 89 or something) I am able to quite easily lockpick all of the locks in the world. Lockpicking invokes Fallout: New Vegas more than Oblivion involving shifting a pick left or right and attempting to locate the sweet spot.

Pickpocketing is the hardest of these skills to implement and improve. I admit that at the start of my fledgling career as a thief, I had failed a minimum of thirty to fourty attempts before I finally managed to pickpocket some fool out of his money and his valuables. My recommended spot for testing whether you are good enough to make it to the big leagues of thieving in Skyrim is attempting to rob the General Store in Whiterun at night. Its a pushover, but it requires everything you generally need in a heist. You will need to lockpick the door (it isn't too hard), enter in sneak mode and steal the various trinkets for sale, ascend the stairs and pickpocket Belethor-the shop keeper who is soundly sleeping. If you manage to do this without arousing his attention, Congragulations. You have managed to pull off very first heist.
